Bactrim Description
Bactrim is the brand name of an antibiotic drug. It is used to treat various bacterial infections. The drug is a combination of two antibiotic drugs, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.
Bactrim is sold under its main trade name (Bactrim) and also under other trade and generic names; it is available in generic form. Other names that Bactrim might be sold or prescribed under include:

Bactrim works by blocking the production of folic acid, which is necessary for bacteria to survive and multiply. Folic acid is also essential to humans and Bactrim use may result in lower production of folic acid, so it is sometimes not indicated for people with certain conditions, such as some serious anemias.
Bactrim is used to treat several different types of infection; some of the most common uses of Bactrim are:
Urinary tract infections
Respiratory and respiratory tract infections
Middle ear infections
Prevention of infections in patients post-transplant
Prevention of Pneumonia
Prevention of conditions in AIDS patients
Bactrim Prescription
Prescription dosages will vary significantly and are based on factors such as age, condition, and weight. Bactrim is used for both children and adults. In children, a pediatric oral solution is usually prescribed whereas in adults the drug is usually given in tablet form. Most often the drug is prescribed to be taken two to three times per day for between five and ten days. Some conditions will require different dosage schedules and longer medication terms.
Bactrim can be taken with or without food, but should be taken with liquid (6 to 8 ounces) to prevent the formation of crystals in the urine.
Bactrim Side Effects
The more common side effects associated with Bactrim use are:
Hives and skin rash
Changes to appetite, especially appetite loss
Nausea and vomiting
Skin rash
Bactrim does carry a risk of allergic reaction, so any signs of allergy should be reported to the prescribing doctor.

Very rarely Bactrim use can cause severe medical conditions. Any suspicious or serious side effects or conditions need to be immediately reported to the treating physician.
